2009 BMW Efficient Dynamics Concept

The BMW Vision concept car clearly demonstrates that the EfficientDynamics objectives are fully compatible when applied to a sports car. Conceived as a 2+2-seater with plug-in full-hybrid technology, this unique car combines the performance of a BMW M vehicle with a standard of fuel efficiency and emission management that exceeds even the current levels achieved by the latest small cars. This outstanding result is made possible by the combination of BMW ActiveHybrid components with an extremely economical combustion engine, and outstanding aerodynamic qualities.

BMW EfficientDynamics Concept is the result of a "clean-sheet" development process to ensure that the correct achievements were made in the areas of efficiency, driving pleasure, technology, and emotional design. BMW EfficientDynamics Concept is the most comprehensive implementation of the EfficientDynamics philosophy seen so far. The powertrain provides a top speed limited electronically to 155 mph, with acceleration to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 3.76 liters/100 kilometers, equal to 62.6 mpg, and the CO2 emission rating is 99 grams per kilometer. CO2 emission management is even more outstanding when driving in the all-electric mode after charging the battery from a plug-in source: Taking all emissions in the generation of electricity into account, as prescribed by the EU formula, the car's emission rating is just 50 grams per kilometer.

The power and performance are made possible by combining a fuel-efficient 3-cylinder turbodiesel with one electric motor on each axle. The intelligent combination of these units, together with precisely controlled energy management, simultaneously enhances the dynamic performance and the efficiency of the car. Overall system output is 356 horsepower, and peak torque is 590 lb-ft. The special arrangement of the two motors and diesel engine allows all-wheel drive when driving in all-electric mode. The result is minimum power loss and a harmonious transmission of the power available under all conditions.

In its design, BMW EfficientDynamics Concept for the first time conveys the dynamic look of a BMW sports car to a hybrid vehicle. Developed with decades of experience in Motorsport, the body of this unique sports car is a result of intelligent lightweight technology and aerodynamic efficiency. In the design of the interior, the focus was likewise on both the fascinating driving experience and, in particular, on transparent, hands-on technology and maximum reduction of weight.

The combustion engine is a cutting-edge turbodiesel featured for the first time in the BMW EfficientDynamics Concept car. Displacing 1.5 liters on three cylinders, the engine consistently follows the downsizing principle of using a relatively small engine combined with a turbocharger to reduce fuel consumption.

Through its compact dimensions, the 3-cylinder fits conveniently in front of the rear axle like in an agile mid-engine sports car, despite the two seats at the rear. Fuel is injected by the latest generation of High Precision Direct Injection, and the turbocharger features variable intake geometry for maximum efficiency. Engine output is 163 hp with peak torque of 214 lb-ft.

The specific output of 109 hp per liter sets a new benchmark in diesel technology. The power delivered by the turbodiesel is conveyed to the rear axle by means of a double-clutch transmission (DCT). This advanced transmission technology, which already offers a particularly dynamic driving experience in BMW's M3 and Z4 Roadster, allows the driver to shift gears without the slightest interruption of power. BMW EfficientDynamics Concept features a newly-developed version of BMW's DCT with six speeds for maximum efficiency and flexibility.

The combustion engine is supplemented by two electric motors. Consistently applying the BMW ActiveHybrid philosophy, development engineers followed the principle of "Best of Hybrid," choosing the optimum combination of a hybrid synchronous motor on the front axle and a full-hybrid system at the rear.

The compact electric motor positioned between the diesel engine and the DCT outputs a consistent 33 horsepower and is able to reach a peak of up to 51 hp. Maximum torque for the rear electric motor is 214 lb-ft, the power, either supporting the diesel engine or in all-electric motoring. When coasting or applying the brakes, the electric motor acts as a generator and feeds electric power to the lithium-polymer battery in the car. The electric energy developed in this way is therefore captured without any additional consumption of fuel through the principle of Brake Energy Regeneration. Energy wasted on the brakes of a conventional car is thus saved within the new power system for subsequent use in driving the car.

A second electric motor acts on the front axle. This engine, a hybrid synchronous motor, offers continuous output of 80 horsepower and peak torque of 162 lb-ft. Extra power of 112 horsepower is available for a period of up to 30 seconds, and, for a 10-second "burst," the electric motor is able to develop 139 horsepower. The power is transmitted through a 2-stage, single-speed reduction gearbox.

The energy cells featured in BMW EfficientDynamics Concept are housed in a chassis element running from front to rear through the middle of the car. The front unit is the lithium-polymer complex, an ongoing development of the lithium-ion battery. Overall, BMW EfficientDynamics Concept comes with a total of 98 lithium-polymer cells, each offering a capacity of 30 amp/hours and developing continuous output of 600 Amps at a voltage of 3.7 V. For a period of 30 seconds, each cell is even able to develop maximum output of 1,200 Amps.

Serial arrangement of the lithium-polymer cells serves to generate nominal voltage of 364 volts, the gross storage capacity of the battery is 10.8 kW/h. With an unusually high discharge capacity of 80 percent, the battery delivers 8.6 kW/h for driving the car. This superior performance comes on overall weight of the entire energy storage system of just 187 lb. A further advantage is that through their optimum dimensions tailored to the specific qualities and features of the car, the lithium-polymer cells, together with the operating strategy chosen with a concept of "forward looking" energy management, reduces the thermal load acting on the battery to such an extent that there is no need for active cooling.

Brake Energy Regeneration captures electric power generated while driving without additional fuel consumption, which is subsequently used to supply power to the electric motors and on-board network. A further option is to connect the lithium-polymer cells to a conventional power socket for a simple and efficient charge process, using a plug-in connector in the front-right wing of the car. Connected to a standard EU power outlet (220 V, 16 Amps), the system requires a maximum of 2 ½ hours to fully charge the lithium-polymer cells. And wherever a power source with higher voltage and amperage (380 V, 32 Amps) is available, the charge time is an even shorter 44 minutes.

The power delivered by the two electric motors and single diesel 3-cylinder engine gives the BMW EfficientDynamics Concept a level of performance superior to anything provided so far by a hybrid vehicle. Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h, for example, comes in just 4.8 seconds and the car could exceed its electronically-limited 155 mph top speed.

At the same time fuel efficiency and emission management now reach a standard only achieved, if at all, by far less powerful small cars conceived for city traffic and short distances. Applying the criteria of the EU test cycle, BMW EfficientDynamics Concept offers average fuel consumption equal to 62.6 mpg. CO2 emissions, in turn, are 99 grams per kilometer. These consumption and emission figures are measured on a consistent internal power balance, meaning that the batteries and storage media for electrical energy maintain the same charge level throughout the entire test cycle (with the same level at the beginning and end) and are charged while driving only by the car's on-board systems.

To further optimize the aerodynamic qualities of the entire vehicle and keep rolling resistance to a minimum, BMW EfficientDynamics Concept comes with tires and wheels of quite unusual size on a sports car. The tires measure 195/55, while large 21-inch wheels provide a contact surface on the road otherwise offered only by a much wider tire. In combination with the sophisticated axle geometry, this ensures agile driving behavior.

The extra-large wheel covers extending over part of the tire flanks add to the unique, very different look of BMW EfficientDynamics Concept from the side. The blade profile integrated in the wheels serves furthermore to reduce the negative effect of the turning wheels on the overall aerodynamics of the car. In all, these features optimizing the aerodynamic qualities of the car give the BMW EfficientDynamics Concept car a very low drag factor (CX) of just 0.22.

How to Fix Common Printer Error Codes for Brother Multifunction Printers

Have you ever encountered a printer error code while using your Brother multifunction printer? Chances are that you have. It is not that the Brother multifunction printer is an inferior machine; in fact, it is one of the best multifunction printers out there. But just like any machine, it can bog down. And when it does, a printer error code might pop up on your computer screen or on the LCD control panel of the printer.

What are the common printer error codes of Brother multifunction printers and how can we fix them? Here is a list of these common printer error codes.

• Error Code S05. A printer error code like this happens when the transfer of data via the parallel port is not going smoothly. Just reset your printer to get it going again.

• Error Code E50. This printer error code flashes when the fuser unit of your Brother multifunction printer gets damaged. When this happens, it is a signal that you must replace your printer’s fuser unit.

• Error Code E51. When the printer’s laser beam, lid or mirrors are not placed in their appropriate positions, it results in this printer error code. Please check if ink cartridges and everything in your printer is where it should be before you start using it again.

• Black pages. Sometimes, the message “Black pages” can flash on the screen, or a black page is actually being printed out. In this case, you would need to take your printer to a service center and replace its jumper wires and diodes.

• Check paper path. When this message shows up, it means that your Brother printer has a dirty or misaligned eject roller. Clean it or straighten it up, whichever is necessary, and then try printing again.

• Poor quality of copy. When the output of your Brother multifunction printer, be it the printout or the fax, is smudgy, it could be because the scanning mirrors or the glass is dirty. Clean them up if they are. However, if these are clean, then the problem could be your printer’s camera. You can try out unplugging your printer for a few hours, but if the problem persists, you may have to go to a service center to get your printer’s camera replaced.

  • You find files mysteriously disappearing or being inaccessible from the hard drive
  • You often observe system being frozen while normal operations
  • System gets locked up when you try to boot the system
  • When you try to open or save a file, it takes unexpected time

Post-failure Signs?

  • When the hard drive has completely failed, the only thing you can do is to replace it and restore from backup. However, you can deduce it by following signs:
  • Hard drive makes strange noises. This particularly occurs when the read/write head is failed and tries to scrap off the magnetic surface while trying to move.
  • System fails to boot
  • You observe a completely dead hard drive- not spinning up
  • You may receive blue screen of death

How to Diagnose?

If you have encountered symptoms, discussed above, you first need to examine the system to check if it is indeed a hard drive failure case:

Digital Photo Recovery – How to recover your precious photos

In digital photography era, losing images and photos is quite often. With more and more users adopting digital photography as a reliable technology, instant and powerful Image Recovery solutions is becoming important to keep their work forever. Digital photo recovery is an act of recovering lost digital photographs, which otherwise seems to be lost. The common tools used for this purpose are available as software products that prove competent to scan a logically crashed storage media to restore the lost data intact.

One of the main factors responsible for digital data loss is availability of high-speed and high-capacity storage media of all kinds that provide rigid support to store digital data. Such media allows you accessing stored information quickly, much earlier than you can expect and that's the reason why data loss chances increase by a weight factor.

Since media like flash cards are being actively used, the odds of their misuse are high on rankings. Experts say that users are often observed deleting their own data unintentionally, pulling the cards while the camera is actually performing read/write operation and using the same digital card with various card readers. Such events can result in corruption of card structure and data inaccessibility.

The good thing about the deletion process that file system never deletes your photos, videos and audios, but only mark them deleted. So, there is always a fair chance that you can get your lost photos back to the original state. Even when the file system is severely damaged, seemingly inaccessible data can be restored back if no new data has been written to the same area of affected memory card.

Image Recovery Software are valuable products that help achieving data recovery of such lost digital files. These are easy to use and user-friendly recovery tools built with powerful technology to scan your logically crashed media meticulously. Image Recovery tools are handy applications that allow you to restore lost photographs with minimum of expenses and efforts. These utilities are designed to analyze the entire memory card structure and detect those segments that have been marked as corrupted or deleted. After the process is complete, these software restore these data at suitable and safe location.

Solid State Drives vs Traditional Hard Drives

The rapid technological advancement of computer technology has brought numerous changes to the way we use our computer. Aside from introducing new computer application software, these changes are apparent to our data and filing system tools. Most of these changes either welcome a new gadget or replace an old computer gadget to improve the efficiency, accuracy and speed of computer applications.

Since data storage devices are getting smaller, thinner and more compact and convenient to carry, old and bulky discs will eventually be phased out. They are expected to be replaced by more reliable, better, smaller and external file storage devices called Solid State Drives (SSD). Manufacturers agree that SSD will be the future of the computer storage devices. With their better and energy-efficient features, no one can resist the improvements that it delivers on the traditional filing and data storage system of the computer hard disk.

Compared to the traditional hard disk drives, SSD is better in terms of power consumption and speed. Since SSD was created after the hard disk drive, it carries more advanced technologies. Its data saving capabilities are rather more sophisticated to that of a hard disk drive. Power saving features has constantly been a part of the modification and improvements done on existing computer gadgets, components and parts. Understandably, the more sophisticated SSD are more power-efficient when compared to the older hard disk drives. Another SSD advantage is the design and material used in its overall construction. Because of its sturdy construction, it is virtually resistant to the damaging effects of falls or shock. Another advantage of SSD over hard disc drives is the size and weight, as you put an SSD and a hard disk drive of exact data storage capacities side by side, the difference will be obvious. Traditional hard disk drives are bulkier and heavier when compared to the light and compact construction of an SSD. Just imagine how much more data an SSD of a hard disk drives size store.

Manufacturers say that SSD secures files and data better against commonly destructive environmental factors. In case of accidents such as falls or even fire, the files saved on SSD are more likely to be recovered than those saved on a traditional hard disk. This is because SSD lacks the moving parts that are typically found inside a hard disk drive. When performance comparisons where done on various models of laptops, SSDs took the lead in performance scores and evaluations. The traditional hard disk drives remain competitive in achieving marginal difference in the scores achieved by SSDs.

Flash-based storage devices are nothing new to computers these days. Beyond their practical multi-functional features, these devices have evolved into a welcome accessory. Undeniably, SSD presents more practical, reliable and overall better storage and filing system security options to computer users. These devices are said to eventually replace the traditional hard drives of the computer. However, due to its high-cost, time will only tell for that to happen. But just like other computer devices, it only takes time for these great inventions to become cheap enough for the general public's use.

LG Louvre GC990 smartphone

The LG Louvre GC990, a concept smartphone by LG, currently has one of the highest resolutions of any camera phone in the market today (or of any camera phone available when it enters into production phase). This camera phone is an answer by LG to Sony and Ericsson; who announced their release of their own high megapixel camera phones earlier in the year. As far as the concept goes, this mobile phone is shaping up to be quite a response.

The Features

The LG Louvre GC990 has a lot of features that will make mobile phone aficionados drool. It is a 12-megapixel camera and is equipped with Schneider-Kreuznach optics. For those not familiar with the name, Schneider-Kreuznach is a very popular traditional optics manufacturer that still makes specialized lenses and glasses. This feature is definitely something that sets it apart from other camera phones, or at least it merits it mention when discussing the best of the lot.

It also comes with a whole lot other features like a Xenon flash, no shutter lag, touch focus and interlizoom, an S-class Touch Ui, accelometer, Bluetooth and wi-Fi connectivity and a whole lot more. It also boasts of being able to record high definition videos of up to 1280 x 720 in resolution, allowing people to capture happy moments in high quality. The LG Louvre GC990 also said to support ISO 3200, and has a 3.2” touchscreen with over 16 million colors allowing people to share pictures and videos with the highest standards of quality.

The Release of the Concept

As of the moment, there is no news yet of when LG will be releasing this behemoth of camera phone. Most people expected LG to release the phone sometime during the end of the year. But since LG already showed the public a little glimpse of the concept during the Korea Products Exhibition, it is expected that the Louvre will be entering the production phase some time in the near future. Here’s to hoping that the release will be sooner rather than later.

As of now, the LG Louvre GC990 is still a concept and as such, countless feasibility and other studies are still in the works. This new flagship of LG might not even be called Louvre when it is released, since the name is but an Internet project name. This also means that the features initially included in the concept might not survive the production phase. But as everything stands, the concept is one very impressive piece of technology; one that will undoubtedly push competition to higher levels and the public stands to benefit the most.

How To Make Your Laptop Battery Last Longer

Laptops are the pinnacle of mobility computing. When you have power. Battery life in laptops slowly deteriorates over time, because of the way laptop batteries store and use power. No matter if you buy your laptop online, off-line and no matter what sales person tells you otherwise. Even if you left the battery out of your laptop, you might still notice a difference in usage times over a period of years, check Battery University for more information on battery storage. But following a few simple tips can save your battery life. Note: This also works for phone batteries as well.

1. Charge the battery early and often.

Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries will lose charge from age, but recharging it early and often makes sure that the charge is kept throughout the cells.

2. Don't Frequently Discharge and Recharge the battery.

This is called a “Deep Cycle” and should be only be done every 30 – 40 charges to re-calibrate the battery meters in the electronic device.

3. Take out the Battery when using the laptop plugged in for an extended period of time.

Batteries are more affected by heat than any other factor. The heat produced by a laptop is designed to keep it away from the battery, but if you don't need the battery in, it's better to take it out and store it somewhere away form the heat produced by the laptop. Preferably in the fridge or freezer*

4. *The battery should never be frozen.

Although the freezing point of Li-ion batteries is around -40 degrees C, (way below what most conventional freezers), when storing the battery just make sure it'll never reach those sort of extreme temperatures.

5. Never deplete the battery to below their minimum voltage (2.4 – 3.0V per cell)

With these few tips, you should be able to keep your laptop, no matter what brand, continually performing well. Battery life also depends on what operating system, programs and strain your putting on your computer. (Tony Schirmer)

PREVENTING THE LOSS OF VALUABLE DATA

It’s a known fact that computer system data is the livelihood of any organization. No company can continue business in the event of total loss of data. The loss of data may also affect private individuals to a large extent. Imagine taking photographs while on holiday at an international destination costing you thousands of dollars or losing photographs of a wedding that cannot be repeated.

Therefore preventing the loss of your valuable data should become a major priority. As Imperative Technology, we are experts in the field of recovering lost computer data and have been involved in almost all data loss situations. Although after losing your data, we are able to assist you to recover your lost data. But unfortunately it’s not always possible to help all our clients, as there are situations where storage media may be damaged beyond the level of repair or successful recovery. We trust this article will assist you to prevent losing your data in the first place. We all understand by making backups will prevent you from losing data, but there are many key factors and different options to prevent the loss of data.

This document may be distributed freely. All our services are listed at the end of this document.

KEY POINTS

  • Ensure that your data is duplicated on at least one other device that is not connected to your computer / server that’s been backed up in any way.
  • By making a backup of your data is not enough, you need to ensure the data that’s been backed up IS WORKING!
  • Do not trust ANY software that reports a backup has been done successfully. The only way to ensure that data has been backed up effectively is to test the data. This is usually done by Test Restore Procedures.
  • Use an effective Anti-virus solution.
  • Connect a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to all critical computers/servers for protection against lightning and power surges.
  • Install & configure your computer hardware correctly as described later in this document.
  • Protect your data from theft by means of Firewall configuration.
  • Ensure minimum Disaster Recovery Policies & Procedures are in place.
  • I trust the information in this document will assist you in preventing the loss of data

With so many backup solutions to choose from, we’ll highlight some of the problem areas and solutions when using various backup options.

BACKUP SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS

When choosing a backup software application, the following considerations are necessary:

The best solution is to rather have a completely accessible copy of your data, as in the complete file and folder structure with individual files being accessible in relevant software applications. This is without needing to restore your data from single backup files, before using the data. For clarity sake, after a backup, the backup files should be immediately accessible as if you were using the files from your local hard drive.

Although the above solution is not always practical, due to data capacity, automation requirements, time frame of backup completion requirements etc. The risk of using backup software applications that create a single backup file, has to be considered:

A large single compressed backup file may become corrupt resulting in no data accessible. This will require specialist data recovery services to repair/re-corrupt the file. Major Research and Development goes into repairing corrupt files. It is obvious that Data Recovery companies develop recovery processes for well-known industry standard type software applications. Therefore choose an acceptable industry standard type software solution for your backups such as normal Windows backup or Veritas Backup Exec etc. where scalable network backup solutions are required. If you choose a proprietary backup solution not commonly known in the industry, chances are no Data Recovery companies have developed recovery and file repair processes for such an application, resulting in huge data recovery costs.

The same software package will be necessary to restore the data, this aspect is sometimes overseen when archiving data, without realizing that software becomes outdated and might not be available at the time a data restore is required. We recommend keeping a copy of all backup software safeguarded when a restore of archived data may be required.

DVD/CD BACKUPS

Burning files to DVD or CD may be a risk, provided that each and every file is tested afterwards by opening the files from the DVD/CD with the relevant software applications. Although this seems to be a tedious task, CD miss-burns is a reality that occurs very often. We recommend the following when storing data on DVD/CD:

Compress the files using a compression utility such as Winzip and burn the ZIP file to CD; the following advantages will be applicable:

  • Once the ZIP file is written to CD, test the file from CD as if you need to extract the file. If the ZIP file displays the content of compressed files, all files will automatically be accessible.
  • The CD File System has many limitations such as; long file names, depth of directory path etc. By burning a single ZIP file, all limitations will be ignored.
  • Time, capacity and number of CD’s, will also be advantageous.
  • Using DVD/CD’s as an archiving solution is not recommended as the media only lasts for a number of years depending on manufacturer etc. The most effective solution for archiving data is explained under “Archiving Data”.

MEMORY STICKS / FLASH DRIVES

Please note, this storage device was designed mostly for transporting data from one computer to another, using it as a mobile device. A USB memory stick should not be used for data backups and is not regarded as a reliable storage device. Ensure after using this device to safely unplug/remove the device prior to disconnecting the device. (Usually an icon with a green arrow bottom right on your screen)

It’s also recommended not to store files on a memory stick by means of saving it to memory stick directly from within a software application. Rather save files on your local disk and afterwards copy the files to the device using Windows Explorer etc.

EXTERNAL DRIVES

External drives use different interfaces of connectivity such as USB, Firewire, SATA, ESATA etc. USB is the slowest of them all. Although all computers have a standard USB interface, to use most of the other interfaces, an interface card is required for connectivity. External drives are devices with standard desktop and notebook computer drives within the external casing. These drives are acceptable to use for data backups but should only be used as an additional copy of your data.

In the event of electronic failure of the external case, there is a chance that the internal drive might be in perfect working order. This may be tested by removing the internal drive from the case, connecting the drive to a standard desktop computer, as a secondary drive. Please note by removing the drive from the case might affect your warrantee, but as we know the cost of the external device is hardly a comparison to the value of the data.

When using these drives for backup purposes, it is recommended not to use a proprietary software application that is shipped with some of the external drives. Rather use standard Windows backup if that is your Operating System of choice. Even better, create backup folder names by date and manually copy required backup files as separate files & folders to the disk. Although much discipline is required for backups if no automated processes are in place. By having readily accessible files as a backup is a far smaller risk than compressed single backup files.

NETWORK DATA BACKUP SOLUTIONS

------------------------------

Use well-known Industry standard Backup Solutions only. When using a network backup solution to backup multiple servers, a fully automated solution is a critical requirement. Network backup software and hardware depends on very specific requirements. It is necessary to employ the services of a company that specialize in Backup Solutions to suit specific needs as all organizations have different requirements.

When choosing a reliable Software Backup Solution for a Network, the following components and considerations are necessary:

Planning regarding capacity of data vs. capacity of Backup Media / hardware platform
Implementation of suitable network backup software which includes the following backup agents:
Ensure to implement various agents to backup multiple Operating systems in a cross-platform network environment.
  • SQL Agent – To backup SQL Databases
  • MS Exchange Agent – To backup all e-mail configurations
  • Open Files Agent – To backup files that are open while accessed by network users
Accelerator Agent – While doing backups, it’s not recommended to run backups while the servers are being accessed by network users because of utilization of the backup process, which puts an additional load on the server. When backups cannot be completed overnight, an accelerator agent may be added to speed up the process.

Autoloader Agent – Used when more than one backup tape is required during a single backup process.

Disaster Recovery Agent – Various commercial network backup software solutions offer additional components for disaster recovery, these agents allow the booting from diskette to restore directly from backup media without the need to install and configure Operating systems and backup software. This reduces down time.

ARCHIVING DATA

---------------

Using DVD/CD’s, as an archiving solution is not recommended as the media only lasts for a number of years depending on manufacturer etc. The most effective solution for archiving data is to store data on a normal desktop type hard drive, preferably multiple copies. Data on these hard drives should be stored in a readily accessible format with separate file and folder structures, in uncompressed format and should be kept in a fire-proof strong room. Off-site storage of data is also recommended. A copy of every software application used to create all data including all serial numbers, access codes to operate the software should be stored on the same disk. This is in the event where software programs become outdated and are no longer in use, at the time where access to old data may be required.

In the event of loose separate hard drives, data should not be spanned across disks where more than one disk is required to restore even a single file.

When using backup tapes for archiving, only tapes with full backups should be considered. Incremental backups of data spanned across multiple tapes are a risk, as all tapes in the backup set are required to do a full restore. Rather store data in chunks as a full backup on a tape-by-tape basis. With damage to one of the tapes, only a partial data loss will be applicable.

The above only applies to environments of small data capacity requirements. There are many scalable Data Archiving Architectures available where large amounts of data archiving are required. Companies that specialize in off-site storage and business continuity will assist you with these requirements.

  • Example Requirements of most Government Regulations
  • Records must be stored in their original form without risk of alteration or deletion.
  • Records must be accurate and complete from the time they are created.
  • Records should be easily retrievable.
  • Disaster recovery plans should be in place, such as storing duplicate records off-site.

How To Get The Best Online Backup Service

Reliable data backup and recovery are critical in today's information-driven age. Therefore there has been major rise in the demand and popularity for online remote backup solutions in the recent years.

Online backup solutions are better than traditional backup media’s such as CDs and DVD etc because you always have access to them from anywhere and everywhere. Online backup services help protect against hard drive failures and file corruption on your computer. These online services allow users to store their most important or bloated files (such as music and videos) on a secure remote server. Their security features are often better than most in house data security. Some services allow you to share files with others as well.

What to look for in an online backup service provider

Choosing a secure and reliable service provider is very important to get secure as well as easy to use online backup solutions.

To get the best data protection and accessibility and high volume of storage we need to define few criteria:

  • Check and compare the service features: Does the service have all necessary and required features like automatic backup, data security, does it support incremental backup, does it allow remote access and also remote file sharing?
  • Is the service reliable: Many companies offer Free / Trial service before upgrading to their premium service, you can try those and see if the service is reliable enough to give access to our precious data.
  • Easy to use interface: User friendly interface is important especially for the not so technical user. Check if the service provider has an easy to use and install software ability to backup data from Windows as well as the Mac.
  • Service Performance: Some service providers have bad system design and the result is their service becomes very slow.
  • Cost comparison: Due to competition lot of companies are slashing their prices to a considerable extent, but dont just go for cheapest / free service. Similarly don't over pay for the service unless you really think you are getting the best service for the amount you are paying.

When Computer Systems Fail, Professional Data Recovery Can Set Your Mind at Rest

Computer systems are prone to data loss with relative regularity, often precisely because they are always becoming faster and more complex. Data loss can take the form of crashes, corrupted hard disks and server failures.

A professional service will swiftly send a courier to collect the failed hard disk. Back at the laboratory, technicians will mount a close inspection of the hard drive in order to provide the client with an estimate of the severity of the problem, the length of time that it will take to fix and the cost of data recovery.

A timescale for data recovery will be agreed with the client before the hard disk is repaired and data restructures restored, the raw data is extracted and the file listings are analysed. Data files are usually returned on new media, such as DVDs or an external hard drive.

The length of time that it can take to recover data from a crashed system depends upon the nature of the crash. The failure can be due to something relatively simple, such as a crash of the computer’s operating system or simple human error. However, there can be more complex reasons for a crash, such as attacks by hackers or infection by computer viruses or malware. Most seriously of all, hard drives can become physically damaged or corrupted.

A simple problem with the operating system usually means that all the technician has to do is use their expertise to extract the data and copy it on to a new form of media, such as another hard drive or disk.

In the event of a faulty or corrupt hard drive, the technicians will have to take more drastic steps, such as making repairs to the file directory itself or by attempting to retrieve the data with the use of specialised software.

In this scenario, the technician will use a powerful microscope to examine the hard drive itself for signs of damage. A similar analysis will be carried out on the system’s electronics and electrical systems, such as its power source, servos and interfaces. The technician will carry out the same level of examination for the drive’s magnetic media, such as its read/write heads.

If the examination reveals faults or complete breakdown, the offending components will be repaired or completely replaced, allowing the disk itself to be cleaned under safe, clean lab conditions, before being upgraded and reprogrammed.

The disk will now be functional once more, whereupon the all-important data will be able to be accessed and extracted. Professional data recovery services have special proprietary programs to read any data stored on the disk’s magnetic platters.

When the data is extracted, it will be transferred to the lab’s own secure servers, before being carefully checked for errors and gaps. If any bad sectors are found, they will be repaired in consultation with the client.(Olivia Wilson)

Tips and Tricks to Keep your Laptop Secure and Safe

The sure to way to make your laptop secure is to never use them, never bring them with you, never open them nor install software on your laptop. Just locked them down in a fireproof safe place and they will be protected and out of harm's way forever. However, laptops were made for us to use, to help us more productive in our work and make our lives easy.

Keeping your laptop secure and protected is of course is still possible with some efforts on your part and with the use of existing security tools and software, learn and do good practices and most of the time using common sense.

From basics to the extreme, these are the tips and trick that will keep your laptop secure and safe.

  • Install Antivirus. Keep it up to date, regularly scan your computer and let it check your email. Without it, your laptop will surely get infected.
  • Install Anti-Spyware. Some Antivirus have bundled anti-spyware. Use them along with the antivirus and always get them updated. Regularly schedule scanning of laptop for spywares, Trojans, adware and other malwares to make them secure.
  • Keep Your System Updated. Let Windows constantly apply updates and patch security holes in your system. However, it is a good practice to always create a System Restore Point and backup your important files prior to applying updates on your system. You can use them to undo changes if problems occur or in case of update failure.
  • Set a System Password. Most computers have a built in CMOS setup password in its BIOS. This require that a password by typed in before it will boot the Operating System. It will prohibit any access to the computer at all. This is definitely not a password that you want to forget!
  • Password Protect Your Windows User Account. Windows user accounts can be assigned a password. This means that for a user to log on using an account, she must know the password.
  • Use Strong Password. A strong password mixes numbers, letters and specials characters. There are also websites available online that you can use to generate strong password or an online password checker.
  • Keep Your Firewall Turned On. A firewall helps protect your computer from hackers who might try to steal information, crash your computer or use it to attack other computers. Even if you know that your company is using corporate firewall to protect the computer inside their network, it is a good practice to always make sure that Windows firewall or third-party firewall is turned on specially when you are working on the road.
  • Beware of Pop-up Security Fakes. There will be occasions wherein while surfing or browsing some websites, you will be presented with a security warning that you computer could be infected with a virus or malware. This fake security software will entice you to scan or disinfect your computer by offering you a handy product to do the job for you. Beware of this – it could be rouge security software.
  • Encrypt Sensitive Data. Consider data encryption if you have sensitive information on your computer. Encryption will protect your business secrets.
  • Back Up Important Data. You don’t have to back up everything on the laptop. Just copy the important files you will need to the server. This will ensure that you will have something to look for when your laptop gets stolen on your trip. You just need to download your important files from the server to get the information you need.
  • Kid’s Computing. If you let your children use your laptop occasionally, always make sure that you keep an eye on them. Even if you are extra careful when using your laptop, this could be put at risk by a simple click of your kids especially when you let them browse or surf the internet. You can use parental-control software to prevent internet or computer use during off hours. Vista user accounts have this feature built-in.
  • Consider Insuring Your Laptop. If you laptop is expensive, it’s worth considering getting your laptop insured. Look for insurance providers such as Safeware that offers this type of service

Physical Security

Don’t be too obvious that you have them. Some fashionable people carry their laptops in expensive cases and this spell trouble for them. Those cases are hot in the prying eyes of thieves. There are available backpacks that are not too obvious that you are carrying a laptop with you and they’re also slash-proof and shock-proof as well.

Bio-metrics. The future of passwords is in your bio-metrics. The most common nowadays is fingerprints, retinas and even the shape of your face.

Lock the Laptop. Most notebook computers have a Kensington Security Slot which is a hole for attaching a lock. That was made for the purpose of securing your laptop – use it.

Track Your Laptop Anywhere. If a PC or notebook is stolen, you can make use of this technology to track down your laptop. It’s not just for car, it’s also available for laptop. There are open source software that is available for free and also proprietary software to choose from.

Take a Look at Windows 7

Windows 7. In a neat little nutshell: It's Vista, but the Vista we wanted back in 2007. Polished, working, ready for whatever you throw at it, and with the endless UAC prompts forever banished to whatever hell we're meant to send well-meaning, but ultimately insufferable attempts to help us out We don't know exactly where that is, but we're pretty sure that Oprah record a chat-show there.

Unlike Microsoft's previous operating systems, Windows 7 received a massive public beta. Chances are you've already downloaded it, and if not, at least at the time of writing you could still get yourself a product key from the website, should a 'friend' happened to have downloaded it in time. Even if you don't want to risk a beta OS on your computer, all this is a good sign that we won't be waiting long for the finished code, and that it'll be worth the incredibly short wait. Even now, it's incredibly stable, fully functional, and far more reliable than it has any right to be.

Not only does this mean that the final release should be good to go out of the box, every developer and hardware manufacturer out there is playing with the same code, readying drivers, updating installation systems, and generally getting ready to go. This is particularly important, because many of Vista's initial problems were a result of the rest of the industry being slow to adapt to it, as opposed to issues with the OS itself. Not only is the basic platform largely the same, thus reducing potential compatibility issues, there's no excuse for anyone not to be ready. Our laptops now feature the 3D graphics support to handle Aero. Our desktop PCs laugh in the face of the system requirements. Put it on netbooks? We can probably get it to run on toasters.

The most visible change from Vista is Windows 7's revamped interface. The Start menu is more or less the same, but the Taskbar is one continuous Quick Launch bar that keeps all your programs right in front of you. It changes things more than you'd expect, especially if you keep forgetting to do things like put your photographs into a gallery, or browse with several windows open at once. Overall, it's a good change - but can be problematic at times. Most notably, it's tough to distinguish between an icon you click to start a program, an active program, and an active program with multiple windows. Several apps feature other minor quirks too. As just one example, if you're running Firefox and close it after a download, clicking on the Start icon will only pop up the Downloads box. Vista simply pops up a new window. Easy.

Most of the other interface changes revolve around tweaking the standard interface. Windows 7 is much better at serving up links to recently used content and folders, such as the Jump Lists at the top of its menus. Another feature we miss every time we go back to Vista is Windows 7's updated notifications panel, where you can go in and either switch off things like a program's control panel or updater icon, or at least tell it not to appear unless it's got something it needs to tell you. This clears up vast amounts of real-estate, if admittedly not as well as our suggested method: sending painful electrical shocks to any programmers who insist on giving their bloody update programs a permanent place in our computers' memory. (Don't ask about the second offence...)

Finally, at least for now, Windows 7's actual windows are much smarter. Drag one to the top of the screen and it maximizes. Break it away and it goes back to its original size. It's a snap to make one fill half the screen, or 'peek' through it to your desktop, all at the touch of a key or sweep of the mouse.

While Windows 7 upgrades the OS itself, not everything from Vista has made the cut. The much-ballyhooed but rarely used Sidebar is gone for instance, usurped by the almost equally ignored Gadgets, which has now been given the run of the desktop instead. Tools such as Photo Gallery, Windows Mail, Windows Calendar and Windows Movie Maker are also missing in action, with the idea being that you just download the free Windows Live suite that ties into Microsoft's assorted online services. This isn't a problem though, and means that when you do download them, at least you'll be getting the latest versions, complete with any added features. It also means that Microsoft has more of an incentive to keep building on them, instead of holding out for Windows 8.

Despite the cuts, most of the classic apps are still around, and updated for the new version. If you love the Ribbon from Microsoft Office 2007, you'll be happy to see its inclusion in the new WordPad. If not, well, bad news. Paint has also seen an upgrade, dragging it kicking and screaming into, oh, at least 1992. At this heady rate of progress, we'll be ready to rock the artistic world with the latest image editing technologies roughly five minutes before the heat of the sun kills everything. So that's something to look forward to.

In theory then, we're in for a good release. However, the devil is in the details - and that's always going to be more subjective. Speaking personally, and having used Windows 7 for a couple of months, I'll be picking it up at launch. The only showstopper bug I've encountered is a minor one involving my volume controls - Windows 7 tells me that it can't find my soundcard, but this isn't enough to stop it playing sound.

If there's a disappointment, it's that there's nothing in Windows 7 that lets me personally do anything new, or even in a particularly new way. Speech and handwriting recognition aren't going to take over from the good old mouse and keyboard any time soon, I'm still too lazy to make proper use out of My Documents when the Desktop is available, and the only thing that happens if I test my monitor for multitouch support is an unsightly fingerpint. There are definitely features for more ambitious users - the new version of Media Centre is particularly good - but overall, it's all fairly familiar stuff.

However, here's the important bit. It's familiar in a good way. It's familiar in the sense that after a couple of minutes, you're ready to use it and get on with your day. Where Vista repeatedly got in the way with its new features and flashy ways of doing everything Windows 7 keeps to itself and dials out the distractions. That's what marks it down as a mature platform, new features be damned, and why I'll be installing it on my computers out of choice, rather than the necessity I felt when Vista was talking up DX10 and its other landmark changes. It's not simply a new shiny thing, but a much needed second change for the Vista OS that's going to be the PC standard for a while yet.(Sandra Prior)

2010 BMW 7 Series high security

With the launch of a new generation of BMW 7-Series High Security sedans based on the BMW 7-Series, the leading supplier of premium vehicles meets the most stringent safety requirements for persons at risk while travelling in their vehicles. Both, the BMW 760Li High Security and the BMW 750Li High Security are the first models in the world to be certified to BRV 2009 and both vehicles meet the requirements of the new ballistic protection level VR7. Due to their highly effective protective armour, the non-transparent body areas of the BMW 7-Series High Security meet the requirements of the ballistic protection level VR9. Hence, both the BMW 760Li High Security and the BMW 750Li High Security provide optimum safety in the individual mobility segment in combination with unparalleled comfort of travel, superior drive technology and an abundance of innovative equipment features to guarantee confident motoring at all times.

The two BMW 7-Series High Security sedans set new standards in the protection of persons at risk while travelling in their vehicle. The unique security concept is based on findings which BMW gained as a result of its determined development work and on more than thirty years of experience in security vehicle engineering. The security concept was developed parallel to the production model and the integration of safety components is an integral part of the vehicle production process at BMW's Dingolfing plant. Specific chassis components are perfectly adapted to the increase in weight due to the sedans' armour plating. Hence, reinforced suspension, dampers and suspension strut top mountings are part of the model-specific component range. This approach ensures finely-tuned vehicle performance characteristics that cannot be achieved by retrofitted armour plating.

Reinforced vehicle-specific armour plating made from special steel as well as newly developed safety glazing protect the passenger compartment in particular from attacks of all kinds. The passenger compartment is protected by armour plating of the doors, the roof, the pillars, the front footwell and the separation wall between passenger and luggage compartments. The steel panels, which were manufactured by means of a special technique, fit the body contours perfectly. The model-specific gap sealing ensures that critical areas such as door cut and body joint lines are safely sealed.

The sedans' undercarriage is armoured by special plating which was developed with a particular focus on maximum explosion protection.
Another new development is the sedans' 2.4" (6 cm) safety glazing. Due to its innovative structure, the multi-layer laminated glass cover provides a unique level of resistance. The window panes are covered with a polycarbonate layer on the inside in order to prevent shattered glass particles from penetrating the interior.

Driving dynamics and comfort on a par with production models.

Even with the highly effective security equipment, both the exclusive character of the interior as well as the driving dynamics that are typical of BMW 7-Series luxury sedans has been virtually retained. Despite their extensive safety equipment, BMW 7-Series High Security can hardly be distinguished from the corresponding production models.

The sedans' high protection level, which is second to none, is combined with a prestigious appearance, outstanding comfort of travel and an impressively powerful drive system. Both the BMW 760Li High Security's twelve-cylinder engine and the BMW 750Li High Security's V8 engine offer a combination of all-aluminium design, BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection with direct fuel injection. Both power units are distinguished by their energetic power delivery from a low number of revolutions, the running smoothness that is typical of BMW luxury sedans and their state-of-the art efficiency. Despite the increased weight of the vehicle, the engine performance characteristics of both models ensure that the new high-security sedans can achieve a dynamic acceleration from standing and a confident engine torque at all speeds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 210 km/h.

The newly developed V12 unit of the BMW 760Li High Security unleashes its superior power of 400 kW/544 hp at an engine speed of 5,250 rpm. Peak torque of 750 Nm comes at 1,500 rpm. In combination with the newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission, the 6.0-litre twelve-cylinder engine impresses drivers not only with its outstanding running smoothness, but also with its ability to spontaneously translate its seemingly infinite power reserve into precisely adjustable driving dynamics anytime. The BMW 760Li High Security accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in as little as 6.2 seconds.

The 4.4-litre eight-cylinder engine of the High Security is the first petrol engine of its kind with turbochargers that are located in the "V"BMW 750Li space between the cylinder banks. The V8 engine achieves 300 kW/407 hp at engine speeds of between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm. It mobilizes a maximum torque of 600 Nm that is maintained between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm. The spontaneously delivered engine thrust is applied to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. The BMW 750Li High Security accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

The BMW 7-Series High Security are distinguished by particularly harmonious driving characteristics. Both the comfort and the active security features of both models correspond to the premium quality standards that are typical of the BMW 7-Series. The innovative and in part exclusive BMW driver assistance systems ensure that potentially dangerous traffic situations can be foreseen and avoided, thus allowing for confident motoring.

The combination of a double wishbone front axle with an integral V rear axle provides numerous benefits in terms of comfort and dynamics, but above all, it results in an outstandingly harmonious handling of curves, virtually eliminating rolling, swaying or tilting behaviour. Moreover, the BMW 760Li High Security and the BMW 750Li High Security are equipped with an electronically controlled Dynamic Damping Control. The dampers adapt to the road surface as well as to the style of motoring.

The high-performance braking system ensures excellent deceleration values in all situations. Inner-vented discs and sliding calliper design for optimum efficiency on all four wheels provide extreme stability and maximum braking comfort. Run-flat tyres are equipped with temperature sensors and a separate tyre pressure monitoring system for each wheel.

Special options for individual security requirements.

Just like the range of comfort options, the security package for the BMW 7-Series High Security can be adapted to suit individual requirements. An intercom system with concealed microphones and speakers allows safe communication with people outside of the vehicle without the need to open doors or windows. Additional safety options include an assault alarm, fire extinguishing system with temperature sensor for extinguishing fires in the engine compartment and below the vehicle as well as irritant gas sensors for protecting passengers from gas attacks. If the interior protection system is triggered by excess gas levels, all windows are closed automatically, the central locking system is activated, the fresh air valves are closed and the ventilation system is shut off. An additional internal fresh-air supply system ensures that passengers are provided with breathable air.

BMW also offers special options for authorities, governments and embassies. The package provides a range of special features such as flag holders, arrangements for radio installations right through to a gun case with compartments for two machine guns in the center console. Also included is an external beacon with a roof installation system and integrated LED flashing lights for the front grille. Upon request, the vehicle may be fitted with an acoustic signalling system that can be controlled via the iDrive operating system.

In order to accommodate this exclusive circle of customers, BMW provides discreet consultancy and personalized sales and service support all over the world. BMW high-security sedans are serviced by certified special garages only. Access to the vehicles is restricted to very few selected and specially trained personnel. As part of the special customer service, BMW offers special driver training programs for security vehicles.

Five Tips For Staying Safe On The Internet

For this article, I thought I would give 5 tips on ways to stay safe while on the internet. These are some very simple tips, but you would be surprised how many people fail to do these things. Anyway, let's get right to them.

First off, never give your passwords out to anyone. I don't care if someone instant messages you claiming to be from AOL, you shouldn't give your password out. You also should be careful of websites that look like official websites that ask for your password. If you are uncertain about the website, just type in the regular homepage address. That way you are sure you are on the actual homepage.

Make your passwords difficult for people to guess. This is such a simple tip, but you would be surprised how many people forget to do this. It's usually recommended to pick a password that has letters AND numbers in it. If you just pick a word in the dictionary, it is easier for someone to guess. Putting letters and numbers together makes it much more difficult. Also, putting special characters in your password is also good.

Do not download software from pop-up boxes. I'm talking about those boxes that sometimes come up when you go to a website. Often times they will pretend to be a warning message that says your computer is infected with Spyware. Don't download those software programs! They are most likely Spyware. If you want to know some legitimate Spyware removers, check out my blog where I have some listed. My blog address is at the bottom of this article.

Do not click on links in spam e-mails you receive! I cannot stress this enough. There is absolutely no reason that you should click on a link in an e-mail from someone you don't know. What is the worst that could happen if you do? Well, the link could take you to a website that will infect your computer with a virus through a security hole. That can happen just by visiting a website. Seriously, there is no reason to click on a link from someone you don't know. If you've got an e-mail from someone claiming to be from eBay wanting your password, then log in from the main website. If eBay really needs you to log in so bad that they are e-mailing you, I'm sure there will be a big notice right on your account when you do log in through the actual website.

And finally, be careful with what personal information you put on the internet. Unless you are ordering something, you should not need to give out your last name, home address, or home phone number. If I sign up for a website and they need something like my phone number, I just give them my cell phone number. Even that though I don't generally recommend.

Like I've said, there are a lot of people that are taken advantage of through the internet. If you make sure to follow these tips, you should have no problem.

Stay safe!(Justin Williams)
